Wow, I’ve been swamped. My last entry is more than a month old. So here’s what’s been going in my life. My university classes have restarted, so one evening is gone, plus all the work at home for that class. The activities of the local chapter of my profesionnal association have also restarted. There goes a few evenings a month as well. My workbench project is also started. Currently the base is almost complete and I’ll tackle the top soon. And more importantly I’ve changed jobs. Yep, after staying 7 years, I’ve moved to a different company. That about sums it up.

I’ve got some new turning I need to photograph, wait for it.

Crayon d’artiste ou d’atelier

Un nouveau kit s’ajoute à mon éventail. Ce stylo solide est fait pour l’atelier ou pour les artistes. Sa mine de 5.6mm est facilement remplaçable dans les magasins de matériel d’artistes. Des mines de différentes couleurs sont aussi disponibles.

Dans le capuchon se cache un petit aiguisoir permettant de redonner à la mine une pointe fine. Ce crayon est revêtu de Cocobolo et la finition est un nouveau nommé Enduro, un polyuréthane à base d’eau. Reste à savoir si la durabilité du produit est bonne.

Rattlesnake Baron

My latest creation. Was a bit scary to turn, not because I’m afraid of snakes but I was afraid to ruin the blank. According to the accompanying sheet, it doesn’t take much to ruin the skin even if it is covered in a layer of clear resin.

I was happy with the result so I figured I should give the blank a kit that would enhance. Since I had a Black Titanium Baron, in fountain, I decided to turn this into an awesome pen. If I can say so myself, I think I managed pretty well to achieve it.

The pen was turned as usual, wet sanded from 220 to 400 grit. Then I used wet MicroMesh from 1500 to 12000 grit. Finally I used Hut’s Plastic Polish. It shines like glass.

La construction est terminée. Reste à poser le velours drapé à l’intérieur des tiroirs. J’ai mis environ 90 heures sur le projet.

Queues d’arrondes à la main, oui monsieur. Seigneur que c’est long, surtout à cette taille.

Starry nights

Last week, we had a few nice nights with clear skies. On one of these nights, it happened to be also very close to the full moon. It’s always a spectacular sight. To the left of the Moon was another very bright spot, way too bright to be a star, it had to be a planet. So I ran to the basement to take out my telescope and try to identify the planet. I thought that I could try and take some pictures of that as well so I ran back inside to grab our digital camera.

The Moon is of course easier to photograph, for the planet, although I could see it pretty clearly, taking a decent snapshot with a handheld camera through the telescope’s viewfinder is a tad harder. Anyway, here’s the best I could take of Jupiter and it’s four Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

Un nouveau site vient de paraître sur le web. LeJardinDeMarieJo.ca est un nouveau blog en français avec principalement des photos de plantes et de fleurs. Un site haut en couleur à voir absolument!

Les photos sont prises par MarieJo, et ce sont toutes des plantes et fleurs présentes dans la cour. Beaucoup de celles-ci ont été parties par MarieJo dans la maison avant d’être transplantées à l’extérieur.

Un stylo et un bouchon

J’ai eu un peu de temps aujourd’hui. En fait, c’est surtout que je voulais faire ces deux items comme cadeaux pour l’étudiante qui a passé deux mois et demi chez nous. Nous avons hébergé une très gentille étudiante de France pendant ces 10 dernières semaines. Comme souvenir, je voulais lui offrir un petit cadeau et aussi quelque chose pour ses parents. Voici donc les items: un stylo de modèle Sierra Platine et Titane Noir habillé de loupe d’érable du Manitoba et un bouchon de bouteille en chrome habillé d’ébène de Macassar.

More excuses

I haven’t updated my blog in a while but I’m still planning to. I’ll be updating my pen cabinet project very soon, I’m just about to complete it. Then I’ll start the workbench.

My todo list just keeps growing and growing so it’s not easy to tie up all the loose ends.

RAVI – Rafraichisseur à vin

J’ai reçu récemment ce produit: RAVI, le rafraichisseur à vin. D’origine québécoise, ce produit de Ravisolution rafraichit le vin de 6 à 12 degrés Celsius en le versant dans le verre. Et ça fonctionne vraiment bien! J’ai fait le test avec un vin à température de la pièce, avec un thermomètre j’ai obtenu 22 C. Après le versage et le RAVI, j’avais 16 C.

Comment ça fonctionne? Le RAVI se place sur la bouteille et le vin passe au travers. On prépare le RAVI en le placant quelques heures au congélateur. C’est tout. Le vin passe dans un tube à l’intérieur du RAVI, une tube en acier inoxydable et c’est dans ce tube que le vin est refroidit.
